Anslinger Being Tough?
Harry Anslinger was a United States government official who served as the first commissioner of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Federal Bureau of Narcotics. He was a supporter of prohibition and the criminalization of drugs, and played a pivotal role in cannabis prohibition. [1]
Excerpt from the book:
Many people assume what we call the War on Drugs began in 1971 during the Nixon Administration. Some believe “the War” began during Prohibition due to the relentless efforts of a racist and moralist federal agent named Harry Anslinger. [2]
Continuing later in the book:
Anslinger was a bureaucratic empire-builder and he saw marijuana as the leverage needed to expand the size and power of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. He railed against the use of reefer, weed, or pot by blacks, particularly black entertainers. Anslinger hated jazz with its free-wheeling lack of rigid structure and he equated it with what he viewed as black depravity. Black bandleader Cab Calloway had a 1933 hit song called Reefer Man featured in the movie International House. Anslinger must have been furious. [2]

Multiple allegations and claims about heavy drinking have surfaced over the years.
A sworn affidavit from a former family member alleged “regular” alcohol abuse and episodes of extreme intoxication. Reports during his nomination said colleagues at Fox News were concerned about his drinking habits. Investigative reporting and whistleblower accounts have also described instances of intoxication in professional settings. These issues became a major topic during his Senate confirmation, where he faced scrutiny over “excessive alcohol use” allegations.

The problem with this is that when we stop setting goals or dreaming new dreams, we stop growing and when we stop growing, we become boring and our life becomes boring. So, how do we go about the business of continuing to grow? The answer is simply to try to do something new, exciting, or different—something beyond what we’ve already mastered. For example, try getting more involved in your community, helping someone in need, making some new friends, learning new skills, reading a book on a new subject, or brightening the day of someone who is down. The truth is that we’re surrounded by opportunities for growth. All we have to do is take advantage of them. As philosopher William James put it, “The minute a person ceases to grow, no matter what his years, that minute he begins to be old.”

Here is the chorus of a song I wrote in 1999. It is a slow waltz and you don’t stumble onto many new waltzes these days.
Chorus
I love you, I love you, It’s you that I adore
I love you, I love you, I will forever more

I love you, I love you, my Dear I love you so.You don’t stumble onto that many declarations of love in one chorus either. If you listen to the current news you might believe that “I think you are crooked.” “I despise you.” Or perhaps “You are unfit.” might be more on target.
My old friend now deceased, Greg Brayton, recorded the song and I never thought I would do much with it but lately I have been making monthly visits to a senior day care center here in Hillsborough. In my presentations I talk about different songs I’ve written and share information on how I wrote the song and how we recorded it and such. Usually, as I am closing my session I would walk around and shake hands with each attendee and look them right in the eye and thank them for attending. Then one time I played my “I Love You Waltz” as I walked around and I’d say “I love you” to them individually. Many of them would say it back to me and smile. I could just feel so much love in that room at that time. It was wonderful. And so it has become my custom to close each session with that song.
As I introduced it recently I commented that there appeared to be a horrible lack of love in this old world right now. That the politicians are filling the headlines daily with horrible statements about one another. A recent photo of our President Obama and Soviet leader Putin as they stared at one another appeared to me to be reeking with hatred. There is an old popular song that became popular that said, “What the world needs now is love sweet love, that’s the only thing there is just too little of.” And I think that song would be more on target for these times than ever before.

Our granddaughter Michelle made us Great Grand Parents over a year ago and then she took a career move to Europe, stealing that precious little guy right out of Jean’s arms. Then we joined Skype and we have been able to visit with that granddaughter, her husband and that little boy and watch him grow older and smarter and even more precious every week.Please indulge us as we share his first day of Pre-K last week.
Skype is an application that provides video chat and voice call services usually, free when using the internet. Users may also exchange such digital documents as images, text, video. We can talk and watch them while they watch us, live. What a hook up. Being in different time zones we’ve learned that the best time is when he is getting his bath and confined to the tub rather than running all through the house. He’s loaded up with energy but he is one happy kid and is now beginning to say words. It amazes me how we can be looking at one another and talk as if we were in the same room. He is such a beautiful little boy and we are eagerly awaiting his return to the U.S. for Christmas when we can snuggle that child again.
