Kristina Ulmer, a ninth grade English teacher, lost her 29-year-old sister in an automobile accident. As she went through her sister’s purse, she found $80.00 in her billfold. Since her sister was a very caring and giving person, Kristina wanted to do something with the money that honored her sister’s spirit. As time passed, she kept adding to the total in the billfold while she tried to figure out what to do with it. Finally, she decided to give each of her students a $20.00 bill and asked them to use it to perform an act of kindness during fall break. One student ordered a glass of water in a restaurant and then left a $20.00 tip. Another baked a batch of cookies for a senior citizen. An anonymous donor heard about the project and provided the money so she could continue this project during the spring semester. Kristina continues to raise money so that she can keep this project going indefinitely and provide her students with the opportunity to experience the excitement that comes along with performing kind acts. What an amazing way to honor her sister!
