Something Good About This Mess

Ever since this Corona virus thing started I’ve been searching for how I can get something good out of this mess. I want to learn something I didn’t know, something I didn’t know about myself and about others. For years now I have been saying that for every bad thing that happens, an opportunity appears where you can then make something good happen.  Well for one thing, for some time I have been hearing the challenge, “Stay at home.” Golly, have we stayed at home.  I  quit shaving.

Oh I have done that a few times before in my life but never long enough to grow enough facial hair that I wouldn’t shave off the first time we were going out in public.

I’ve been staying at home so long now that I have a real mess on my face. I was visiting The Poet’s Walk at Ayr Mount here in Hillsborough for several months before Covid-19 struck, greeting walkers or joggers going by me and offering to read to them one of my poems. It has been a wonderful experience and now as I look at this scrubby beard of mine I am starting to suspect that I am looking more and more like an old coot that might walk up to someone on the Poet’s Walk and offer to read them a poem.

Maybe I haven’t been taking that role as seriously as I should have.  Who knows, maybe this whole thing has given me the gift of insight. This new look might help me pause and think a little bit before I speak. And If I work on this these coming days when they repeat that request, “Just stay home”  I might develop a smile on my face and with luck I might somehow be blessed with the gift of wisdom and then discover the joy of giving. And who knows, I just might live happily ever after.
