The Year 2020

Here I go again! I don’t know about you but it seems like every year, a few days after Christmas I get all antsy and I feel compelled to write down a whole bunch of impossible resolutions.  At ninety I am tempted to sum up all of my goals by singing the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive! Stayin’ Alive!” and that would lead me to a discussion on The Quality of Life. And that might lead to the subject of Being Useful. I don’t want to live a useless life.  People keep telling me, “Art, I always find at least one thing in your Memo that helps me in some way.”

I wish I could find something useful in everything that I read. When I go out and make a presentation I can tell that I am doing something useful from the smiles on the faces in the audiences, in their laughter or their applause. If they quit acting that way then I would know that what I was doing was not useful. I would sit down and shut up.  I don’t think I need a list of resolutions I can just say it this way.  “To be loving and useful.”  That ought to do it.
