Not long ago, I was in Trader Joe’s looking for a Mother’s Day card. I checked the card section of the store but found none. I then asked an employee who I’ve known for a while and affectionately refer to as “Awesome Ava,” if there was any other place I should look. She suggested I check the card displays by each of the registers. I thanked her and checked those displays and again found none. Seeing my lack of success, she double-checked those same displays and also found none. She then looked at me, smiled, and said with a twinkle in her eye, “let me do some checking.” She disappeared for about three minutes and when she reappeared, she was holding three Mother’s Day cards. She held one out to me and said, “I really like this one!” I looked at the card and agreed that it was an excellent choice and then proceeded to express my gratitude for her having gone the extra mile on my behalf. The lesson here is be kind and appreciative to retail employees and they’ll bend over backwards to go the extra mile for you.
