I have a book titled “1st Cavalry Division, Korea, June 1950 to January 1952.” When the 1st Cav was pulled out of Korea at the end of 1951 they moved the entire Division to Camp Crawford at Sapparo, Japan, on the Island of Hokkaido. There is a segment in the book showing us in winter training and I was amazed when I first found a photo of myself wearing a harness and pulling a sled. Shortly after that I was transferred to the 99th Field Artillery and immediately sent to an Army School in Eta Jima, which was formerly the Japanese Naval Academy. I was trained as an Officer’s Clerk to maintain officer’s records. It turned out to be a much better job than pulling a sled. When my children asked “What did you do in the war, Daddy?” I could respond, “Well, for a while I was the lead dog.”
