I recently came across a study which was referred to in a book titled, The Inflated Self, where a large random sample of male adults were asked to rate themselves on their ability to get along with other people. As it turned out, everyone in the sample (100%) rated themselves in the top half of the population. While it’s true that not everyone can be in the top half of the population, it’s equally true that everyone thinks they’re in the top half. In this same study, 60 percent said they were in the top ten percent of the population and 25 percent ever so humbly saw themselves as being in the top one percent. What this tells us is that everyone thinks they’re special, which means they would like to be treated that way. The lesson here is that if you make it a point to treat people the way they want to be treated (special), you won’t need to worry about making friends, because you’ll attract people to you like a magnet.
