The Homomonument is a groundbreaking memorial in Amsterdam, unveiled on 5 September 1987, and notably, it’s the first monument in the world dedicated to commemorating LGBTQ+ people persecuted because of their sexual orientation, especially under the Nazi regime.

Three pink granite triangles, each measuring about 10 meters per side, are arranged to form one large triangle approximately 36 meters wide, linked by subtle granite lines that weave through the pavement. The pink triangle is a reclaimed symbol: originally used by Nazis in concentration camps to mark gay men, now transformed into a powerful emblem of remembrance and queer resistance.

Each triangle symbolizes a different temporal dimension, and each points toward a significant landmark in Amsterdam.

The triangle flush with the ground, pointing toward the Anne Frank House. It bears the inscription from poet Jacob Israël de Haan: “Naar vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen” (“Such an endless desire for friendship”)

The triangle extending into the canal, accessible via a few steps leading down to the water. It looks toward Dam Square’s National War Memorial and invites reflection and active remembrance.

The elevated triangle, rising about 60 cm above street level, serves as a podium for gatherings and performances. It points toward the headquarters of COC Nederland—the world’s oldest continuously operating LGBTQ+ organization.

Historical Context

The idea dates back to the early gay rights movement in the Netherlands. Activist Jef Last proposed a “monument to the unknown gay” in 1961. A key moment came in 1970, when activists were arrested for placing a wreath at the National War Memorial—triggering momentum toward creating this separate tribute. The design by Karin Daan won a city-organized competition in 1980. Funding was raised from individuals, the Dutch Parliament, and the city and provincial governments.
