Art Fettig - Memory...if he has a problem remembering...

Unlearning
"Learn to unlearn." Benjamin Disreali.  I had a friend named Ray Motsavatge and he was a memory expert.  Every week he would memorize the entire current issue and then he would tear up the magazine passing out the pages and members of the audience would call out their page number and he would tell them what the page contained, the particular article, quoting from it and also the advertising on that page.  When I asked Ray if he has a problem remembering the pages he startled me when he said, "It is no problem learning them and remembering them but the real problem is being able to forget last weeks magazine."

Now I have thought this over and I guess that is the problem with all progress.  As Disraeli said about, "Unlearning."  Mark Twain once said that it wasn't what we know that gets us in trouble, it is what we know that just ain't so.  Now days there is so much that I know that just ain't so and furthermore, just maybe it never was.

Say Something Good
I read in the newspaper the other day that Art Linkletter, TV host of 50's and 60's had died and he was 97 year old. Art wrote the book Kids Say the Darndest Things. Later, Bill Cosby did a TV show based on Art's old show and Art would often appear on the Cosby Show. Here is a bit of bio listing Art as a professional speaker.  http://www.sterlingspeakers.com/linklttr.htm Many years ago I was absolutely thrilled when I received a phone call and then a letter from Art Linkletter asking permission to use my poem Growth on a PBS Special. He said it seemed to capture his philosophy towards life. He later told me that he used it to close all of his speeches and he gave many thousands of speeches in his career. I guess the best way to sum up the total of his life is that Art was a good man.May God bless America and keep our troops from harm.

Here is that poem.

I don’t ever want to be
What I want to be
There is always something
Out there yet for me
I get a kick from living
In the here and now
Yet, I never want to feel
I’ve learned the best way how
There is always one hill higher
With a better view
Something waiting to be learned
That I never knew
‘til my life is over
Never fully fill my cup
Let me keep on growing

Points To Ponder
The course of human history is determined, not by what happens in the skies, but by what takes place in our hearts. Sir Arthur Kent

A Little Humor
Based on what you know about him in history books, what do you think Abraham Lincoln would be doing if he were alive today?
  • Writing his memoirs of the Civil War.
  • Advising the President.
  • Desperately clawing at the inside of his coffin.   David Letterman
Quote of the Week
It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them. Alfred Adler
