Avo-Active Care Chews Avo-Active Care Chews
If you're taking care of a dog with arthritis or hip dysplasia, you're probably already supplementing with glucosamine. It's something the body produces, although we produce less as we age. It's natural, and it works by supplying the building blocks of synovial fluid -- the lubricant that keeps joints flexible. The key to successful treatment is to get enough glucosamine into the dog, and to use glucosamine that's high enough quality. First, you have to give the glucosamine in a form the dog will enjoy. Second, the portion supplied by the supplement must be high enough to do some good. And third, the ingredient quality must be high. Avo-Active Care™ Chews from Breeder's Choice® Pet Foods cover two of those three criteria. The high protein, low fat chews contain high-quality sources of glucosamine and chondroitin (some say chondroitin is important, others say it's useless because the molecules are too big to be absorbed). Avo uses cattle parts to supply these ingredients: bovine cartilage, bovine trachea, and bovine connective tissue. There's also beef liver for flavoring, and for other health benefits. Other ingredients include avocado oil for its healing and soothing properties, vitamin C (which can also help reduce inflammation), and vitamin E, which can help reduce inflammation through its antioxidant action. Avo-Active Care Chews are tasty, at least for the dogs. Part of that may be due to the strong odor the chews have. Breeder's Choice says the chews "have a naturally pleasant aroma." Unfortunately, my wife doesn't agree. But the dogs could go on eating these treats all day. Each chew has 27 mg of glucosamine HCL, and 270 mg of chondroitin sulfate. Chops usually gets about 1000 mg of glucosamine a day, so that would translate to 37 chews a day. Breeder's Choice recommends 4 chews a day (108 mg of glucosamine) for her 85 to 90 lb. weight. (They also recommend feeding their Avo-Active dog food, with 200 mg of glucosamine per cup. So Chops would get another 400 mg from the food.) Chops and Katie both love Avo-Active Care Chews, and I've been happy to use them as a supplemental part of our daily glucosamine regime. I just wish they had more glucosamine in each chew. You'll find Avo-Active Chews at pet supply stores and in pet products catalogs. They're packed in a 1 lb., resealable, oxygen-barrier bag for freshness. -- Ross Becker Ingredients: Bovine cartilage, bovine trachea, bovine connective tissue, beef liver, avocado oil, ascorbic acid (source of Vitamin C), DL-alpha tocopherols acetate (source of Vitamin E).
