Here is the latest information for writers, as of January 2002. GOOD DOG MAGAZINE HAS SUSPENDED PUBLICATION. WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS. Please watch for more articles from Good Dog!'s story library online, later this year. Previous editorial guidelines follow for reference. Good Dog!® magazine is now delivered primarily online. We offer subscribers a choice of seeing the issues at a subscribers-only color website, at a text-only website, and in a downloadable Adobe Acrobat pdf format. The Acrobat edition can be printed by subscribers in a magazine format. A book version (IssueBook) containing several issues at a time is mailed to subscribers who don't have Internet access. We also do an annual book containing all issues for the year. Some articles are posted in our online Article Library at our public website, http://www.gooddogmagazine.com/. The issue may be sold later as a back issue or distributed as a sample issue. FeesShould we publish your work in Good Dog!, we will pay US$35.00 for 850 to 1000 words, or US$50.00 for 1001 to 2000 or more words. Writers usually receive payment 60-90 days after publication. We will also provide you, at your request, with a link from your Good Dog! article to your own website, or to another website of your choosing. In addition, you'll also get your choice of a one-year online subscription, or a one-year Issue Book subscription. If you choose the 1 year online sub, you'll be put into our database and e-mailed the subscribers-only website addresses for each of the next six issues. If you choose the 1 year IssueBook subscription, you'll get the next IssueBooks we publish. Since the books won't always come out just as your piece is published, we'll also give you the online access info -- but only for the issue in which your piece appears. RightsWhen we publish your story, we get first electronic and print rights to that story. This gives us the right to use the article as part of a Good Dog! issue, in all of its electronic and print formats, as described above. There is no time limit to our use in the print and online formats for this issue. We also will have the right to use your story on our public website as a stand-alone or archived article. (See http://www.gooddogmagazine.com/admin/articlearchive.htmfor examples.) We will also have the right to include your story in a hardcopy, soft-covered IssueBook, and in an annual publication compiling all our issues for the year. You maintain the right to sell your story to other publications and websites, once it has appeared in Good Dog! Sometimes we make selected content available to other web sites in order to promote Good Dog! Please let us know if we have your permission to use your article for this purpose. This is not a requirement for publication. General GuidelinesPlease read Good Dog! and analyze our style. Note our distinctive voice. Please try to write in this style: informative, talkative, friendly, expert, fun. Write in third person, unless first person is more appropriate, as with a humor or opinion piece. Every article needs a beginning, a middle and an end. The thoughts must flow in a logical sequence, carrying the reader through from the beginning to the end. Each paragraph must have a topic sentence which states the main thought of the paragraph. Other sentences should support the topic sentence. Your writing must be interesting and tightly written, with your personality showing through. If you write about a dog, let the dog's personality come through, too. Use anecdotes and occasional quotes to liven things up. Storytelling techniques will humanize your piece. Always keep in mind that we look for a conversational style. Use contractions: "I wouldn't" as opposed to "I would not." Back up your statements with quotes from experts to give your story credibility. We reserve the right to edit or rewrite your work. We do not accept fiction or poetry. We do not accept material "written" by the dog or in the dog's voice. We do not accept sentimental articles that are about the death of a dog. We cannot run stories that have been printed or will be printed (in either hard copy form or electronically) in such publications as Dog World, Dog Fancy, Dog & Kennel, or the AKC Gazette. We do run articles which have previously appeared in breed and obedience club newsletters and from regional dog publications or other regional publications with written permission of the author and of the publication. We prefer to receive single-spaced (no double-spacing, please) articles via e-mail -- as a message, not as an attachment. Alternatively, we accept submissions on Macintosh or IBM (ASCII) 3.5" disks in Microsoft Word. Please provide hard copy along with the disk. Always include your full name, address, day/night phone and fax numbers, and article title in your e-mail. Label disks with your name, phone number and article title. Print name, address and phone numbers on all photos that you send or that we request. No slides, please. We can accept photographs to accompany your story. Send via e-mail. TIFF format is preferred. JPEG or GIF are fine, too. Freelance photography: We very rarely buy photos. Good Dog! is not responsible for unsolicited photographs, slides, transparencies and manuscripts. We cannot guarantee that these materials will be returned. Please contact us by e-mail mailto:judi@gooddogmagazine.com) if you have any questions about our policies.
